San Francisco’s NoPa neighborhood is home to a spot where rustic Italian fare like fresh pasta, antipasti, pizzas, fish, and meat dishes are prepared with a hefty dose of California flair. Co-owners David Nayfeld and Matt Brewer bring their extensive experience from the restaurant and wine worlds to the table at Che Fico Alimentari, named after the casual Italian expression meaning “How Cool.” With this joint venture, they present their vision of Northern California as though it were a region in Italy, featuring a market-driven menu. Start with Che Fico’s take on suppli, a traditional Roman snack with fried risotto, fontina cheese, dill, and tomato. Mary's organic roasted chicken, served with treviso, delicata squash, and jus, is very popular and for good reason: it’s fresh, light, and full of flavor. Finish with an order of rich and creamy chocolate budino, made with salted caramel, sea salt, and caramelized hazelnuts. Add a bottle of prosecco to complement your NoCal-Italian feast.
