Keith McNally’s rustic trattoria in the West Village has been a neighborhood staple since its 2007 opening, and for good reason. From hand-stretched focaccia to spaghetti rolled by hand, homestyle Italian dishes all get the artisanal treatment here. Crispy Roman-style fried artichokes are served with the full stem, while succulent Sicilian-style meatballs are braised for hours in a tangy red tomato sauce. Standout dishes include a zesty pici al limone spaghetti with lemon and an ample amount of Parmesan, and a frilly mafalde alla Pugliese with sweet Italian sausage and broccoli rabe. Need more than just a carb fix? Protein-rich dishes like the pollo alla diavola (grilled chicken with chilies and lemon) or the pan-roasted salmon with polenta are just as craveworthy. It’s not a proper Italian dinner without a cannolini filled with ricotta, pistachio, and chocolate, or a mascarpone and espresso-drenched tiramisu for dessert.
