Now I know why Nhom Banh Juk is an iconic dish. While I enjoy fish and fish stews, I have to admit I've been reluctant to try it even though I've added it to my cart repeatedly for weeks. It's my new favorite. I ordered it this morning for breakfast, as I read is the typical meal for which it is served. I prepared half of it and was satiated. The "broth" is sort of a catfish gravy with fine bits of meat and the aroma of coconut milk. Not at all overwhelming as some fish dishes can be. Paired with the rice noodles, fresh herbs, fried shallots, bean sprouts, lime, and some kind of small but potent chile, it was an outstanding combination of textures. I finished the broth happily, and can't wait for seconds later.
The iced coffee I have been unable to resist. If you're a fan of Vietnamese iced coffee, you'll love it. It has not missed once. I order it every time.
This place is a culinary gem and a delight to patronize. Looking forward to eating in one of these days. The consistency and variety make the prices well worth it."

"This was my first time trying Smalls, and to be honest, I figured it would just be "another basic burger joint". Instead, I was pleasantly surprised. Their fries arrived still hot and crispy - even after traveling across town. And the portion was very generous. I'd equate it to a large waffle fries from a certain chicken sandwich place... They had good flavor and were tasty on their own. Their queso has a very, very subtle kick to it that worked well with the fries also.
Now, for the featured item: the burgers. I ordered a pair of the regular burgers and one of the bbq bacon jalapeño burgers (no bbq for me). And I was impressed - the jalapeños were flavorful without being too spicy, so you actually got the flavor of the pepper as well as a little kick - more than the queso but still very mild. The burger patty itself was moist and flavorful. The bacon was actually a good chewy bite instead of soggy or crumbly. The bun was soft and buttery. You actually get a really good balance of flavors in each bite. I think what I like most though is that it was just enough for a small appetite like mine. Overall impression? I will definitely order again. Their prices are reasonable, the food is actually good and not just passable. And the service is quick. And bonus - they actually look at the order and get the details right - something far too many places manage to flub up."

Being Vietnamese myself, I know what the dishes should and should not taste like. They have the most "Vietnamese" menu I've encountered - dishes, not language. Da Nang has the most authentic tasting nouc cham (fish sauce). They use the herbs I know but never expect to see (especially all together) in a restaurant (THAI basil AND mint, PLUS the usual salad veggies). Their meats are flavorful and tender. Their veggies are fresh. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the peanut sauce. But that's more of a personal preference than a poor quality. (Theirs is heavy on the hoisin and fish sauces. I make mine a bit heavier on the peanut butter side. Theirs is also more liquid, whereas mine is more like a gravy consistency.) Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant and will be ordering from here again in the future."
