Burma Superstar opened in 1992, and its star has shone bright in the Bay Area and beyond since then. Showcasing the cuisine of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), the wide-ranging, perfectly shareable menu also has influences from India and China, as well as Thailand and Laos. Get things going with Burmese samusas: handmade pastries filled with curried potatoes, mint, masala spices, and green peas served with a spicy, tangy dipping sauce. Add something green, like the palate-cleansing ginger salad, a combination of cabbage tossed with pickled ginger, fried garlic, sesame seeds, and split yellow peas. If there’s a chill in the air, be sure to order the bracing mohinga, or catfish chowder noodle soup, also known as the national dish of Burma. There’s more than something for everyone on this menu. Vegetarian and vegan selections are plentiful, with sesame tofu and dry-fried string beans topping the list. There are also gluten-free options, and coconut chicken curry and Burmese-style beef or lamb can be prepared mild or extra spicy. There are booze-free beverages, like ginger lemonade, as well as beer, bubbles, sake, and wine to round out your order. Add a few packaged snacks, like golden garlic chips or Burmese crunchy mix to munch on later, when you want to relive the magic.
