Since 1982, Sant Ambroeus has been serving beautiful, simple, seasonal Milanese cuisine in Manhattan. Their menu satisfies all day long, with brunchy options like traditional Sant Ambroeus steamed asparagus topped with Kumato tomato and hard-boiled farm egg. Midday is also perfect for their carciofi e rucola, a traditional artichoke salad with arugula, hearts of palm, and shaved 24-month-aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. A bowl of spaghetti with tomato sauce may sound ho-hum, but not their spaghetti al pomodoro e basilico, made with a slow-simmered sauce of sweet San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, and fresh basil. The risotto di mare offers a briny taste of the sea, adorned with garlicky peekytoe crab, clams, scallops, and mussels. And if you’ve never had risotto alla Milanese, you might want to try this traditional Milanese dish, simmered with Navelli saffron. The kitchen also does fish very well, especially the whole branzino, served with Chiodini mushrooms, braised leeks, and roasted potato. Fans of Parm will love their Melanzane alla Parmigiana, a bubbly bake of eggplant, San Marzano tomato sauce, Parmesan, and basil.
