But they add up changing the decades long consistent quality that we came to rely on. Season salt seems different , They cook with more pepper than they use to, lettuce is chopped bigger making it weird to eat, tomatoes and onions seem to have a different flavor. Now it is a place that is not special anymore. All the small changes combined affected taste and quality. Sad to say, another childhood memory is forever gone. This month, I’ve been making an effort to support small businesses because I’ve been disappointed by the customer service at so many large corporations. Tonight was my first order, and it was for my sister, who is pregnant with triplets.
I don’t expect perfection, and they happened to be out of macaroni and cheese (which honestly tells me the food must be amazing because it sold out!). Summer, one of the employees, contacted me right away to let me know they had just served the last of it. She even offered to make an entirely new pan if I wanted some, explaining it would only be about a 30-minute wait. Keep in mind, they only had about an hour left before closing! That level of customer service was incredibly thoughtful and truly went above and beyond.
I don’t like inconveniencing people, and neither does my sister, so Summer also gave us several alternatives to choose from. Realistically, restaurants run out of popular items, and that’s completely understandable. We decided on collard greens instead.
I mentioned that the meal was for my sister, who is pregnant with triplets and due any day now. Since she hasn’t gone into labor yet, her doctors are still allowing her to eat. As a sweet surprise, they included an extra side of candied yams. When I arrived to pick up the order, everyone was just as kind. They congratulated us on the three new additions who will soon be joining our family, and they genuinely shared in our excitement.
This is exactly what I love about small businesses and what I sometimes miss at fast-food and chain restaurants. It’s the personal connection. The people cared. They related to us. I didn’t feel like I was just another transaction—I felt like a valued customer and, more importantly, a human being.
They have absolutely earned my business, as well as my family’s. I will be leaving positive reviews everywhere I can and recommending them to everyone I know.
