"My son has been raving about Philly On the Block for a while now.
He once had me drive to some remote corner of North Hollywood to find their truck as they were not in their usual spot in Burbank; an adventure that allowed us to explore a neat little event.
I loved their menu: simple - straight to the point.
My son had just eaten one of their sandwiches and wanted more haha. So I ordered him another one and got one for myself. Literally the best way to end our day together.
I'm quite the picky eater but one bite of this had me feeling like Squidward taking his first bite of a Krabby Patty. "All the wasted years!"
Haha I loved it. For me - the best part was that it wasn't greasy. The sandwich was fresh - and the bread was crunchy despite my ordering it via delivery.
The bread was a bit smaller than I had hoped but the fries completed what was otherwise a delicious Classic Philly.

"As a born and raised New Yorker (Brooklyn, to be exact) who lived there for 31 years, until I moved here last year. I was really hyped to try this spot. Whenever I see “New York” in the name, my expectations automatically go up. Lowkey LA is letting me down lol
Overall, this spot was pretty good. The salad was fresh, and the mixed platter meat was flavorful and well-cooked. It definitely gave me a taste of a cart back home, which I appreciated.
That said, I do have a couple of tips especially if you’re going for that authentic NYC cart experience:
1. The rice:
Basmati rice on a classic New York platter should be white or that signature yellow from saffron/turmeric. The rice here was brown and oily, and unfortunately it kind of ruined the plate for me. It just didn’t taste right and wasn’t very edible. The rice is such a big part of the platter, so getting that right would elevate the whole dish.
2. The pita:
In NYC, they never pack the pita directly on top of the sauced chicken. It’s usually placed on the side wrapped separately in aluminum foil so it stays warm, soft, and fluffy. Here, the pita was pressed into the meat and sauce, and a lot of it ended up soggy. Keeping it separate would make a big difference.
Aside from those things, the flavors were solid and it definitely reminded me of grabbing food from a cart back home. With a couple small tweaks, this place could really nail that true New York street food vibe."
