"I'm from the east coast and lived for a while in Maryland and Virginia where seafood and crabs/crab legs are abundant (and cheap!). I also love a good low country boil which our friends (who were from GA) would make on occasion when they did their fish fries. So I had a hankering for shellfish and found this place on Door Dash and liked the menu. So I bit the price bullet and treated myself (for context and comparison, you can enjoy a seafood buffet in VA for $35 and eat all the crab clusters, shrimp, clams, mussels, etc. you want) and got the Deck Cadet's Catch Combo l $10 OFF in the Daddy Sauce which is a low country boil of sorts. I'll start by saying that overall it was tasty and it's a good amount of food but I can't see this feeding 3-4 people like it says, unless this supposed to be a shared appetizer vs a meal. I mean I can eat 4 crab clusters alone, so 1 crab cluster and 1 lobster tail was just a "taste" if you will (cuz no one splits a crab cluster or lobster tail)! :-) So Much of the filler is from the potatoes and shrimp. Still, all things considered, this satisfied me ! I still think this meal is way overpriced which is why I took off 1 star, given that you only get 1 cluster and 1 tail but perhaps that's what it costs in LA(?). I'll also say I thought it needed a little salt to me since I'm used to the saltiness of Old Bay seasoning with my crabs and shrimp. But it was good and did the job in terms of satisfying my hankering. And The food was nice and hot when it arrived. It's a great place to try. "

Yes, the food was fresh, the seasoning was good, the coating was crispy, and the portions are good. But the shrimp and fish were overcooked and dry, which made them un-enjoyable. The tartar and hot sauces didn't help. The sole filets are REALLY thin, plus the shrimp is butterflied which also makes them thin. So they should be cooked in less time. The Cole slaw was bad. Very sweet and no acid to balance the sweetness. Plus it was kinda watery. Maybe this was a one-off. But I just had to share this experience because it was such a let down. Or maybe stick to the fish only and thicker fish pieces I had before."

But my initial issue with the Escoveitched Fish (this is my 2nd time ordering it), that for the price, the fish size is small compared to other whole body fish meals I get from other spots , still stands. This meal felt more like $25 not $36. My other Jamaican spot that had a really good-sized snapper dinners for $34 (and their fish was really good) stopped serving fish altogether (maybe due to cost or supply chain issues?), but I had a hankering for escoveitch (and felt too lazy to make my own) so I decided to try HM's again. The peas and rice was good as always (and there was a lot of it), and the fish was cooked well but just ok flavor wise tho the pickle was tasty and worked when eaten together of course. But overall, in comparison, not a completely satisfying meal for me personally for the price once you factor in delivery and tip ($52). It would be nice if they could find creative ways to be a little more generous with the fish if possible. But still, I love their food. "

And for the price, the red snapper was smaller than expected and compared to the fish I get at this other spot that charges $2 less. But still, I overall truly enjoyed this meal. What I mostly appreciate about this spot is the added Jamaican dishes I rarely see on other menus here in LA. I got the Ground Food (provisions) to go with the fish (boiled green banana, yuca, and dumplings) which I haven't had on the West Coast (I'm from NYC). It's a nice break from rice n peas or white rice options especially with dishes like salt fish and ackee which is a staple. They also have stew peas with pig tails, breadfruit, jerk pork, and the bean soup so I definitely plan to order those next time. I miss those foods/flavors for sure. "
